Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)

Enlightened Generation is working in partnership with GlobalGiving to fund the efforts of Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s leading children’s literacy nonprofit. Proceeds from the Mysteries of Language and Communication collection are going toward RIF’s mission to get books and reading resources into the hands of children, often in underresourced communities. Reading Is Fundamental was founded in 1966 by Margaret McNamara in Washington D.C. to give free books to kids. Reading Is Fundamental began as a bookmobile traveling to D.C. elementary schools, community centers, day care centers, and even laundromats.
Their focus was on finding ways to bring books directly to families and kids. As their funding grew, so did their reach. Along the way, many notable figures have worked with and supported RIF, such as Oprah Winfrey, LeVar Burton, Rosalyn Carter, the NBA and Shaquille O’Neal, and many more. They have partnered with corporations such as Macy’s, Amazon, Dollar General, and others to implement their reading programs and support their mission to help solve the enormous literacy crisis that exists in the United States. Reading Is Fundamental has become the leading nonprofit children’s literacy organization. To date they have impacted over 212 million children and have distributed more than 430 million books and resources online and in person. For more information visit their website: RIF.org
